lawyer. but in the '50s and '60s he became active in the movement against apartheid in south africa. he was conficted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government and sentenced to life in prison on south africa's robbin island. after 27 years in prison he was freed. >> i cherish the idea of a new south africa. so help me god. >> reporter: he became south africa's first black president and crafted a new nstuon. he won the nobel peace prize and traveled the world repairing south africa's image and promoting tolerance. he retired from public life but continued to meet with dignitaries from around the world at his home. >> he achieved more than could be expected of any man. >> reporter: in june, he was rushed to the hospital suffering from a recurring lung infunction he first contracted

in prison. he eventually went home remaining in critical condition. danielle nottingham, cbs news. >> just four months after he left prison in south africa he toured the united states. among his stops, the bay area. more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him, many waving the flag of the african national congress. mandela was 71 at the time. he told the crowd he felt like a young man again and his batteries had been recharged. willie brown was host of the event. >> there have been lots of people in our lifetimes who had positions and they passed on but nobody ever matched the incredible inspiration and humanity of nelson mandela. >> california was one of the first stages to discourage financial investment in south africa during apartheid. "cbs evening news" will have much more on the death of nelson mandela. that's coming up at 5:30.

caters to guys, matt gear heart owes his recent sales to reminders from mother nature. >> big cold winds, whoa, hey, okay, now it's time to layer up, guys. >> reporter: next door at the ice cream shop cream, hot chocolate sales are up 60% month to month. ice cream sales haven't dipped much. >> we have fully digital thermostat and it replaces analog thermostat. >> reporter: those fixing heaters are in high demand. tricity heating just installed this high-tech thermostat at this antioch state farm insurance office. the workers feel spoiled. >> i am now. it's truly nice. >> reporter: workers can now wear high heels and not boots. they also don't have to wear these gloves anymore. >> i would rather be warm at all times. >> reporter: some businesses do not share that sentiment. whether it's repairing your heat or your soles. i called around to other heating companies, as well. some are taking reservations for the middle of next week at the earliest. live in pleasant hill, i'm ryan

4:30 a.m. smoke filled the hallways while dozens of people escaped the flames. but they had to stand outside for an hour in subfreezing temperatures. some of them just in their pjs. >> i had to go up there to talk to the officer about getting into the high school because there was kids without shoes without blanket. >> the group eventually took shelter here in san leandro high school. one person suffered smoke inhalation. another had some chest pains. authorities did contain the fire to one apartment. but still no word on what caused. another fire overnight claimed a life in benicia. firefighters pulled an elderly couple and their dog from the home on larkin drive at about 2 a.m. authorities say one of the elderly victims died at the hospital a few hours later. the home had smoke detectors but it's not known whether they were working. the cause of the fire is being investigated too. checking bay area headlines, a man wanted for attempted murder in san jose has been shot and killed by stockton police.

he was chased and stopped on interstate 5 at 1 a.m. officers say the man pulled out a knife and they fired. the freeway was closed for hours. his identity is released yet. kabam field, that's what cal's memorial stadium will be called for the next 15 years. kabam is a bay area videogame company. it paid $18 million for the naming rights. three of the four founders of kabam are uc-berkeley graduates. and 49ers football fans can whine and dine at levi -- wine and dine at levi stadium. a popular chef will open up bourbon steak and pub. fans can have steak and wine. the restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner. well, a fifth day of searching for a silicon valley ceo and his family. what crews are now saying about the prospects for survival in the idaho wilderness. >> we offer our deepest

remains found near the u-c a cruz campus back in 1994 ha been identified as "kori j just police say they have made a major break in a nearly two decade old case. remains found near the uc-santa cruz campus in 1994 have been identified as cory joanne lambster of pacifica. she disappeared back in 1993 when she was 17. investigators were able to use her fingerprints to confirm the identity. cory's death is an open homicide case. police have identified two persons of interest and are looking for the public's help to solve the crime. the weather is improving in the rural area of idaho where the search for a missing san jose family is in its fifth day now. teams on the ground and in the air looking for the single- engine plane piloted by dale

smith with four others on board. crews have been scouring the backcountry. they are now focused on the area near the johnson creek landing strip. even family members are joining the search effort. >> a tough situation with the elements and some rugged terrain. you know, they have a lot of planes haunts and groundspeople helping us search for our loved ones. >> the plane has been missing since sunday when it was lost from radar and no longer had cell tower contact a mile east of the johnson crete airstrip. another american with ties to the bay area has been killed in libya. ronald smith was a teacher at an international school in benghazi. u.s. authorities say smith was shot and killed while jogging thursday morning. smith is reportedly from texas and went to graduate school in austin. he described himself as libya's

best friend on his twitter account. >> we offered our deep he was condolences to the victim's family, friends and loved ones. we are in contact with the family and are providing all appropriate consular assistance. >> reporter: no one has claimed responsibility for his murder in the eastern libyan city of benghazi p but suspicion will likely fall on islamic militants. smith was reportedly running near the u.s. consulate when he was gunned down. that's where terrorists killed ambassador christopher stevens and three other americans last z smith was one of four people killed in benghazi on thursday. a spokesman at the school where smith taught described him as a great guy. he had been working at the school for more than a year when classes ended next week he was reportedly planning to fly to the u.s. for the holidays. he has family in los gatos. so far they have not agreed to speak with the media. they are working full time but can't make ends meet. minimum wage workers joined a nationwide movement pushing for higher pay today. this group bombarded a mcdonald's in oakland this afternoon. they are among hundreds of workers around the country demanding a $15 minimum wage and the right to unionize. just a short time ago, chopper 5 was over a march in the east bay drawing attention to that cause. cbs reporter danielle nottingham gives us a look at why the industry says bigger paychecks could mean fewer jobs. >> reporter: fast food employees took to the streets from los angeles to new york, chicago to tampa. >> what do we want? >> reporter: workers looking to supersize the minimum wage. protestors are asking for $15 an hour in the nation's capital this person makes $8.25 at mcdonald's and can't raise two

children on it. >> my kids deserve a better life than i had. >> reporter: groups representing the restaurants say labor unions are organizing these rallies and these protestors do not represent their workers. >> there have been more people being paid to demonstrate in front of restaurants, very few workers have walked out. >> reporter: the national restaurant association says the majority of their minimum wage workers are part-time employees there to earn extra cash and raising the federal minimum wage would only lead to layoffs. >> you end up with a lot of people that have part-time jobs now having no jobs and being unemployed tomorrow. >> reporter: workers have support from the white house and the senate could vote on a federal minimum wage hike before the end of the year. but it has little chance in the republican-controlled house. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. >> all that change that's left at airport security checkpoints and there is a lot of it is now going to be donated.

last year the transportation security administration collected over $531,000. in the past, the money went towards tsa's budget. the house has passed a bill to give the money to the uso. the senate still has to vote and members are still on their thanksgiving recess. everyone knows payday loans are an expensive way to borrow money. but some banks also offer short- term loans that can be just as expensive. julie watts reports on a new crackdown. >> reporter: they are called deposit advances offered to customers who have direct deposit so i borrow the money the bank pays itself back with the fee when the next direct goss comes in but you -- deposit comes in but you can get trapped in a cycle of debt. one woman got more than 60 back-to-back deposit advances from wells fargo costing her nearly $3,000 in fees. federal regulators are now putting new restrictions on deposit advances. banks will only be allowed to

offer them to customers once a month and they will have to assess whether the customers can afford those fees. and millions of facebook and google and twitter users are being told to change their passwords. the information security company trust wear says hackers have infiltrated about 2 million computer accounts over the past month through a malware program called pony. the program is sent through spam links and trust wear says the majority of the passwords were forwarded to a server in the netherlands. and finally, first it was car service, then a cab. now for one day only the people behind the app that lets you request a ride on demand is delivering trees on demand. >> so today we are delivering christmas trees on demand courtesy of uber and home depot. you simply open the app and request a christmas tree and it's delivered right to your door. >> reporter: not every doorstep. i tried to order one and discovered uber couldn't deliver to my san francisco neighborhood. but they are delivering to

we are down to 46 degrees in walnut creek after a high of just 50. let's go to the weather maps and talk about where we are right now. napa 42 degrees. you hit 16 this morning napa. concord currently 46. oakland at 48. mountain view 48. there is another freeze warning in effect for the entire bay area with the exception of the city of san francisco. expect several hours if you live away from the water several hours below freezing just like this morning. it may not be as cold tonight but it will be very cold again. mountain view down to 34. napa 28. fairfield 27. oakland 40. if you are right on the bay or water it will be milder but still well below normal. we still have that arctic express that polar express still rolling down that cold air from canada right into the bay area. but something else is going to roll down moving right down the west coast. we have an area of low pressure sliding down the coast and by tomorrow night, we'll have ourselves some rain showers

moving in but it won't be just rain. above 2500 feet, it will be snowfall. so watch out, mount hamilton, some of the east bay hills maybe even the tomorrow of mount tam catching a few snow showers friday night and saturday morning. let's play it out in futurecast. clouds increase pretty early tomorrow. so mostly cloudy come afternoon time around 7 p.m. the rain in the north bay first and then rain overnight elsewhere. so what to expect? freeze warning once again tonight. rain moves in late tomorrow. those snow levels will be low especially for early december. we typically don't see this but we will. and the weekend looks dry. rain is gone by saturday morning. it will still be cold. we could see another widespread freeze coming up saturday night sunday morning. high temperatures tomorrow, still well below average. fremont los gatos and pacifica highs only in the low 50s. walnut creek 51. pittsburg 50. dublin tomorrow only 51 degrees. increasing clouds for sausalito with a high of 51. richmond 50. petaluma 50. farther north look at ukiah, that's not your overnight low. your high tomorrow just 42 degrees. your extended forecast will start with friday through the
